About this deal

Another aspect of McCullers' writing that I admire is her flawless shifting of points of view between characters. Despite how flawed the characters may be, you cannot help but sympathize with their motives and views through the lenses of their own logic. Besides this, the prose and imagery are incredibly vivid. urn:oclc:859622112 Republisher_operator [email protected] Scandate 20111213193534 Scanner scribe9.sanfrancisco.archive.org Scanningcenter sanfrancisco Worldcat (source edition)

Clock without hands : McCullers, Carson, 1917-1967 : Free

Published in 1961, this story is set in a small town in southern USA. The overt story concerns race, justice and to some extent mortality, though there are plenty of other threads. However, it's the examination of the protagonists' views on race that are most interesting and, to some extent troubling, especially to the modern reader as the N word and variants are used quite often, albeit as a noun/statement, rather than necessarily as an insult. The late behavior of Malone, standing against all he has supported in the past, cannot be reconciled with his previously weak character and his adolescent hero worship of Judge Clane.

Clock Without Hands (1961) by Carson McCullers

In Fayetteville, North Carolina, she at 23 years of age wrote The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter in the southern gothic tradition. Editor of McCullers suggested the title, taken from " The Lonely Hunter," poem of Fiona MacLeod. Carson McCullers and many other persons, however, claim that she wrote in the style of southern realism, a genre that Russian realism inspired. People interpreted the novel as an anti-fascist book. Altogether, she published eight books. THE JUDGE: A gluttonous, bigoted man who lied to himself as to his worth, and at age 85, has come up with a plan for the federal government to make reparations to the South for the financial ruin brought about when slaves were freed. We learn most of what we need to know about Malone’s life: his fading hope as he goes from doctor to doctor, his changing relationship with his sexually vacant wife after he tells her he is going to die, his loss of interest in his business, his involvement with an old friend and drinking buddy, Fox Clane, an aged former congressman and judge.Judge Clane dominates most of the action in a novel which begins, follows, and concludes with Malone in situations completely unrelated to the judge’s motives and spirit.
