The man who was found with a bag of guns at Adelphi East Canje, on Tuesday,China Jerseys Cheap, and who bit two policemen in his bid to escape was slapped with five charges and remanded to prison on Friday.Timothy Sampson, 25, of 51 Adelphi New Scheme, East Canje, Berbice appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo on Thursday at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court to answer five charges.Around 22:00 hrs on Tuesday at Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice while trying to prevent lawful apprehension, Sampson bit police Constable Gladwin James. Sampson was also charged with biting police constable Darrel Ramsey while trying to prevent lawful apprehension. Those charges were indictable.Sampson was further charged with being in possession of two AK-47 assault rifles, one UZI submachine gun and one double barrel shotgun without being the holder of a licence. He was also charged with being in possession of ammunition without being the holder of a licence. To the three latter charges he pleaded not guilty.Prosecutor Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, who asked that bail be refused, said that he will rely on the statutes for the indictable charges. While for the other offences he said that bail should be refused, because the accused is a regular offender and if granted bail there is every likelihood that he would flee the jurisdiction. He also stated that the man has other matters of similar nature pending in court and while on bail for those matters, he continued to commit similar offences.Attorney at law Charrandass Persaud in his plea for bail, stated that Sampson is married and a father of one. He has a fixed place of abode. The attorney stated that while the statutes state that bail should not be granted for some of the matters. The attorney stated that his client was pounced upon by about eight men who appeared from the dark and were in an unmarked car. “These men appeared from nowhere. My client was only trying to represent himself. Taking into account what happens in society today, anybody will try to represent themselves.”“These men never identified themselves and my client did not know who they were,” Persaud continued. The Magistrate refused bail and transferred the matters to the Reliance Magistrate’s Court for hearing on October 20, next.
