Barry was a very capable welter-weight boxer in the 1960’s and early 1970’s. He came from Salford and was managed by the late Stan Skinkiss.
Barry had a total of 52 fights over more than ten years and boxed in every corner of the U.K. many of his earlier fights were at the famous Free Trade Hall in Manchester.
Barry was also good enough to represent the U.K. taking part in professional contests in South Africa, Australia and Denmark where he fought hard fights against world class opponents.
It is not known if Barry boxed as an amateur before he boxed as a professional.
Barry’s son Michael also boxed as a professional light-welterweight boxer during the 80’s and 90’s.
